9 tips for choosing a permanent makeup artist

Microblading, micropigmentation, and other types of cosmetic tattooing are becoming incredibly popular. Here are nine tips to choosing the best permanent makeup artist for you.

1. Photos

Photos are key - make sure to see lots of before/after + healed work. Examples of healed work are the most important photos to review. Beware of edited, filtered or Photo-shopped photos.

2. Legitimate Business

A registered business ensures regulatory compliance and inspections by local Health and Safety Officers. Tattooing is an invasive personal service. A high standard of health and safety is required to ensure client safety.

3. Insurance

Professional insurance is a MUST. Without professional insurance both you and the artist are at risk.

4. Professional Space

Work areas are required to be clean, private, professional, and meet health and safety regulations. A hand washing sink is required to be in the room. The room should be free of porous surfaces like carpet, fabrics, and unnecessary decor.

5. Safety

Ask or get the artist to show you how the work station is set up to prevent cross-contamination during the procedure (e.g. barrier plastic, gloves, single use covers, etc). Ensure the needles are in individually packaged and certified sterile. Needles must also be single use, opened in your presence, and inspected under a magnifying glass before use.

6. Product

Not all pigments and products are created equal. Ask where pigments are manufactured, if they are third party tested for contaminates and quality, and how long the manufacture has been making permanent makeup pigments. Some pigment ingredients are better suited to experienced artists and for certain procedures. Also, anesthetics contain medical ingredients which are regulated by a DIN# in Canada.

7. Questions

Is the artist able to answer all of your questions. If not, are they willing to get back to you with answers.

8. Comfort

How does the artist make you feel. Make sure they make you feel comfortable, confident, and are willing to work as a team. There must be a balance of professional input and client satisfaction.

9. Artist Trifecta

Talent + Training + Passion. Find an artist with a balance of these three. A passionate artist with natural talent, training, and advanced training is who you want tattooing your face.
